The maiden edition of My Type Series, a hangout by seasoned typographer, Yemi Fetch took place last weekend, 13th October, 2018 at Musterpoint, Ogba-Ikeja.
The event boasts top professionals from every nook of Nigerian creative space. There were sizable representations from the advertising agencies, design agencies, digital and print media, etc. It was the gathering of a tribe associated by a common interest – typography. Participants showed up to learn how captivating letterings can influence buyers’ choice.
The event which started at 11am on Saturday had two sessions; the first addresses the fundamentals of typography, understanding the anatomy of typography and type classifications, after which participants got their hands dirty with “the real thing”.
For the practicals, participants were also divided into two groups with each having a group leader. A task that requires sketching of custom types was assigned to each group, and individuals within the group came up with their unique style of lettering which was submitted to the team leader for approval.
Upon submission, the group goes through all the sketches, deliberate and select the best of them that gets to the next stage. The team leader then submit the best sketches to the instructor as unanimously approved sample for digital illustrations and rendering.
It was a very intensive and interactive class. There were also talks about the challenges of being a professional typographer in Nigeria and suggestion were encouraged from participants on how to pull through those challenges.
After the drills, participants were treated to a sumptuous meal and then it was time to meet and greet. Pictures were taken. Attendees exchanged contacts. Some took selfies. One was camera shy. At the end of it all, it was worthwhile and overly fun filled.
According to Yemi Fetch, the convener of #MyTypeSeries, the first set of folks who attended the event automatically become members of #MyTypeMyTribe community. These guys will enjoy huge discounts on subsequent events as we strive to build a community of professional typographers in Nigeria.
Yemi Fetch also stated that the hangout will be biannual. However, in few weeks time, videos will be uploaded weekly on IGTV to keep budding typographers abreast of latest trends and news on typography.
