who is yemi fetch?
I’m a Creative Designer passionate about identity creation and typography. I live in Lagos, Nigeria.
Are you just a typography guy?
Not really. But I do enjoy working on projects that afford me the opportunity to communicate via custom illustrative forms. For me, Typography does exactly what music does to the soul; it is uplifting, expressive and memorable.
I particularly love what I would like to call the ‘twists and turns’ of letterings, which involves making interwoven connections with elongated tails running through existing loop in each letter. With this, the eyes follow the curves and focus on whatever the lettering tries to express.
Besides typography, I also enjoy other aspects of design that have contributed immensely in making me an all round creative guy.
is this something you’ve always wanted to do?
As a kid, I suffered from speech impediment. And art was the only tool I could depend on for expression. By art I mean; paintings, writing, music, dance etc. I’ve always loved art in its purest form. I’m not surprised it’s become my profession today.
What have you been up to?
Back in 2006, I started a small design studio (7Series Idea) with two of my friends. Our aim was solely to meet the immediate design needs of small businesses within the neighbourhood. We spent the next three years honing our skills and proffering inexpensive solutions to challenging low budget projects.
In 2009, I founded a business magazine known as What’s Up. The defunct magazine was more like Yellow pages showcasing small businesses. Although we were able to throw in some business related articles and interviews. The maiden edition had Sound Sultan on the cover and we interviewed him on his popular Naija Ninja clothing line.
2011 to Date.
I started Freak Creative to cater for design needs of media houses and Ad agencies that want to outsource designs, and also to help small and medium scale businesses have a taste of quality designs by providing them with top class ‘below the line’ ads both digitally and in print.
I also co-founded an urban clothing brand, FETCH , in August, 2015. The clothing line was birthed to help creatives look comfortable at work. We have some of my favourite letterings screen printed on our branded cloths to inspire and get creatives in the mood for work.
